OWA spelling fails on ISA 2004 <--> Exchange 2003 after April security updates
I have not touched my faithfully running ISA 2004 front-end OWA serverand Exchange 2003 back-end for months. The OWA spell check started failing after applying the April critical security updates on the ISA 2004 server. Users receive the message "The spelling in this item can't be checked. Try again later." and their session times out. In the ISA 2004 logs, I receive a "failed connection attempt" to POSThttps://myserver/exchweb/bin/spell/owaspell.dll when I launch the spell check. Everything else works fine in OWA. In the exchange server OWA weblogs I had "POST /exchweb/bin/spell/owaspell.dll" with code 200 (indicating everything is working)just before rebooting the ISA 2004 serverwith the security patches. After the reboot I get POST /exchweb/bin/spell/owaspell.dll with the code 401 (indicating things are no longer working as they should be...). The following patches were applied: 08-023- KB948881 - ActiveX Killbits (hxvz.dll) 08-022 - KB944338 - vbscript.dll jscript.dll updates 08-025 - KB941693 - windows kernel update (gdi32.dll / win32k.sys) 08-020 - KB945553 - dnsapi.dll / dnsrslvr.dll 08-024 - KB947864 - IE6 cumulative update 08-021 - KB948590 -gdi32.dll / win32k.sys (I think this update is replaced by 08-025) KB948496 - turns off SNP network features (although neither of my NICs seems to support RSS and TCP Offload). Any suggestions on which update may be causing this issue? Anyone else experiencing this? Thanks. Dan

Hi, I understand that the speck check didnt work after installing the updates for ISA 2004 server, the error message stating The spelling in this item can't be checked. Try again later" was received. Regarding this issue, please take the following steps to troubleshoot it: 1. Open IIS Manager. 2. Expand the Default Web Site and right-click the /Exchweb virtual directory, and then click Properties. 3. Click the Directory Security tab. 4. Click Edit next to Anonymous access and authentication control. 5. Click Integrated Windows authentication, and then click OK. 6. Click Apply. 7. If you are prompted to do so, click Select All in the Inheritance Overrides window to select all the Child Nodes in the window, and then click OK. 8. Click Edit next to Anonymous access and authentication control. 9. Click to clear the Integrated Windows authentication check box, and then click OK. 10. Click OK, You can view the below resource as reference. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/825430/en-us Thanks Allen
